Baseball Position Drills: Now your team will perform like a MLB

Every position in baseball requires certain skills to master each position. Of course there are those common skills that all baseball players must have, but it is important that each player practice skills that are specific to each postition. Make sure you have each player practice their drills that are specific to their position they play during the game.

Infielders and catchers have a lot in common as far as throwing technics, but your catcher does not need to practice the drills that are for the 1st baseman. The stance that a catcher may have to clear a batter would be different than the stance a first baseman would have to field the ball.

All great coaches develop certain drills for each position that will help the kids learn what to do and most importantly how to do it. Make sure the kids give you there full attention and run these drills for ten to fifteen minutes a practice.

A couple of examples of these drills are as follows:

A. The Pitcher
1. Balance and Lunge Drills
2. Drills with different runners on base
3. Proper Grip on the ball
4. Lunge foot drill
5. Target game - to help with ball placement in catchers mitt.

B. The Catcher
1. Blocking drill - probably one of the most important drills for a catcher
2. Your Stance
3. The Grip
4. Receiving / Framing the pitch
5. Feet \ Body placement

C. The infielders
1. Glove Drills
2. Short hops
3. Agility and speed
4. Using quick hands
5. Rotation on ball

D. Outfielders
1. Straight Toss
2. Rotation
3. Proper Stance ( how to watch the pitcher)
4. Long Toss
5. Backup running

Each of these Five drills per Position is a great way for you to teach your team the best way to perform on the field. Having your team Practice these drills will improve performance and concentration. These Drills will require the players to have a strong self discipline and for the coaches to encourage their team members. When the position drills are done right then, the coach can add to or change the position drills up so that the difficultly remains there. Also make sure that the players understand that they are to be in charge of mastering the drills, which may require working on some of the technics at home.

Be sure to check back soon as well will explain each drill for each position.
