Baseball Fielding Drill : Bucket Ball

Bucket Ball is a fun fielding drill that not only gives the kids a lot of practice catching ground balls, but also keeps them interested and motivated. Keeping the practice fun and exciting, which will help your team actually learn more during baseball practice.

Pick two players to be captain, and let the coach divide the kids into two teams

You will need two empty Five Gallon Buckets.

Place one bucket on the ground a couple of feet down the firstbase line from home plate, and the other down the third baseline.

Send One team to First Base and the Second Team to Third Base.

Rules are:

  1. You must catch the ball before you can throw it back.
  2. The ball must be thrown in the bucket on 2 to 4 hops.
  3. No throwing directly into the bucket on the fly.
  4. No bowling, or rolling the ball on the ground to the bucket.
  5. First team to get 5 in a bucket wins the first round.
  6. Then groups switch bases for the second round.
  7. No running in to throw, the throw is made from firstbase or thirdbase.

Each Team lets one person STAND on their base and they have to one hop the ball into the bucket, after they catch the ball from the coach.

Once a kid has thrown the ball they go in the back of the line. First team with Five in the bucket wins. Also, sometimes the player with the most in the bucket gets to hit first during batting practice.

It's harder to get the balls in the bucket than you might imagine.

The kids have a lot of fun cheering each other on and they learn focus on catching the ball and throwing at a target.

It goes a lot faster if you have two coaches throwing the balls.
